SEVEN YEARS OF THE PROJECT
Seven years have passed since the 2019 event Monistrol, un món de guitarres (“Monistrol, a World of Guitars”), a musical itinerary held on May 5th through the historic center of Joan Carles i Amat's hometown. The music of the instrument that the former Monistrol doctor helped popularize with his famous treatise was combined with the recitation of some of his Aforismes Catalans (Catalan Aphorisms).
From that moment on, a fortunate conjunction of the stars allowed that tiny embryo to begin its steady growth.
And so, in November 2020, when the pandemic had already begun its decline, the booklet of the Petita Història de Joan Carles i Amat (the “Little History of Joan Carles i Amat”) was published, with the ineffable illustrations of Pilarín Bayés, which was a way of creating an initial social base in the town.
In October 2021, on the eve of the 450th anniversary of the “universal Monistrolense,” seven scholars gathered to celebrate his figure with the evening ‘Una conversa a set bandes sobre JCA’ (“A Seven-Way conversation about JCA”) a relaxed and familiar gathering that offered ample evidence of erudition.
And now that the anniversary is well underway, under the acronym 'JCA450', the Any Joan Carles i Amat (“Joan Carles i Amat Year”) event brought activities throughout Catalonia in 2022, with an anthology concert on September 24 in Monistrol featuring Hopkinson Smith, who has since become the project's "great guru". The second part of the commemorative year began in October 2023 with the first Acadèmia Internacional Joan Carles i Amat (“Joan Carles i Amat International Academy”), a training event that brought together plucked string students from various parts of Catalonia, Spain, and Europe.
And finally, in October 2024, the first edition of the Festival Joan Carles i Amat arrived, subtitled "Concerts and Training," highlighting what will be the event's "big brand": the perfect combination of concert and training activities. This first festival included five concerts and the second edition of the International Academy.
And now that we've entered 2025, the project has reached seven years of its most decisive step in the revival of Joan Carles i Amat. Identical to last year, the Festival Joan Carles i Amat 2025 will be local in scope, pending the possibility of expanding its scope to adjacent territories in 2026.

The Festival

The 2025 Festival follows the same structure as the previous year, both in terms of concerts (a total of six, one more than last year) and training courses.
The most notable highlight is the presentation in Catalonia of the first CD by Hopkinson Smith and Sophie Klussmann, ‘Chansons & frottole’, recorded in Switzerland in June 2024 and the result of a collaboration that began in 2023, which Monistrol has been fortunate to share from the beginning. It will take place on Sunday, October 12, at the Església de Sant Pere.
Another notable concert is that of Àlex Garrobé at the Escolania of Montserrat, featuring works by Ferran Sors, who trained at the old Montserrat school in the 18th century.
For the second consecutive year, Sophie Klussmann is teaching her historical singing course in connection with that of Hopkinson Smith as part of the third edition of the Academy, and Guillem Pérez-Quer rejoins after being replaced last year by Anders Clemens Øien.

The great reception of the first collaboration between the Association and Esbart Monistrol Dansaire has led to a new challenge this year, expanding the dances into the Baroque period, coinciding with the time when Carles i Amat lived: the transition between both styles.
And what a luxury it is for the Esbart to dance them accompanied live by period instruments!

ESBART MONISTROL DANSAIRE
Esbart Monistrol Dansaire was founded on September 22, 1990. Sponsored by Esbart Sabadell Dansaire, it gave its first performance in Monistrol on April 21, 1991. It is an organization dedicated to the collection, preservation, teaching, and dissemination of the traditional dances of the Catalan Countries, always taking care to offer and maintain this folklore in its purest possible form.
The general characteristic of the Esbart’s dances is their sober and austere simplicity, and therefore their natural distinction and elegance, free from any exaggeration and any contrived effect. What Esbart Monistrol Dansaire aims to show in its performances is as simple as the culture, history, and spirit recovered from the Catalan people.
Currently, the Esbart is composed of three groups: children’s, youth, and Dance Corps. The different sections actively participate in Catalonia under the direction of Anna Rodríguez and with the collaboration of Carmina Cañadó on costume matters.
The motivation of this organization is none other than to maintain a living tradition and at the same time to fully enjoy the possibilities of showcasing our culture everywhere.

Monistrol de Montserrat, birthplace of Joan Carles i Amat, is a picturesque town in Central Catalonia located at the foot of the Montserrat Mountain. With a history dating back to the 10th century, the town as we know it today was founded in the 14th century, growing around the emblematic Gothic Bridge over the Llobregat River, built to facilitate pilgrims’ access to Montserrat.
Monistrol preserves a rich historical heritage, maintains a vibrant community life, and enjoys excellent transport connections.
