Presentation

The commemoration of the 450th anniversary of Joan Carles i Amat in 2022, approved by the Departament de Cultura de la Generalitat de Catalunya, led to the celebration of the Year of Joan Carles i Amat [JCA450], which, centered in Monistrol de Montserrat (the native village of the figure), brought activities throughout Catalonia. The Central Event was the Commemorative Concert held in Monistrol on September 24 and starred the legendary Hopkinson Smith in homage to this Catalan "Renaissance man" to whom we owe the authorship of the first guitar treatise published in Europe.

Thanks to the continued support of the Department of Culture, the commemoration also extended into 2023, with the celebration of the International Joan Carles i Amat Academy (October 11 to 14). The central focus of the Academy was the course on historical plucked string instruments taught by the same Swiss-American master. In parallel, two classical guitar courses were scheduled, led by Àlex Garrobé (professor at ESMUC) and Guillem Pérez-Quer (professor at the Liceu Conservatory of Barcelona). The Academy was completed with informative activities around the multifaceted profile of the figure: the learned doctor, the man of letters, and the musician and treatise writer.

Concert activities also had their place, with the Inaugural Concert ‘Le Jaulne et Bleu’ • Songs of the Renaissance, again with Hopkinson Smith this time together with the German soprano Sophie Klussmann. The event took place on October 11. The other concert was the final performance of the course students, held as the closing of the Academy on Saturday the 14th.

The Festival

With the arrival of 2024, and after the commemorative year, the great goal on the horizon in Monistrol de Montserrat is already beginning to take shape: the International Guitar Festival named after the figure and expected to expand throughout the territory. However, until this great milestone arrives, the Joan Carles i Amat Festival, on a more local scale, will serve as a preview, an embryo of the future event.

With a perfect balance between concerts and educational activities, this first edition of the Festival includes five concerts of very diverse types and the second edition of the Academy, again with Hopkinson Smith giving master classes on historical plucked string instruments and with classical guitar courses by Àlex Garrobé (Catalonia College of Music) and Anders Clemens Øien (Aragon Conservatory of Music), who this year replaces Guillem Pérez-Quer.

The great novelty is the inclusion of a historical singing course taught by Sophie Klussmann, coordinated with Hopkinson Smith's course.

Monistrol de Montserrat, birthplace of Joan Carles i Amat, is a picturesque town in Central Catalonia located at the foot of Montserrat Mountain with a millenary history dating back to the 10th century. However, it wasn't until the 14th century that the town emerged, around the emblematic Gothic Bridge over the Llobregat River, built to ease access to Montserrat for ancient pilgrims.
Monistrol preserves a rich historical heritage, maintains a vibrant community life, and enjoys excellent transportation links.
